Documentation structure
=======================

Directory hierarchy
-------------------

doc/
*.man	- Guides, and user-specific documentation (packages,
                  whitepapers, etc.).

	cmdr_introduction
			Introduction to the project.
cmdr_license	License of the project. BSD.
	cmdr_changes	ChangeLog for releases.

	cmdr_howto_get_sources
How to get the sources of the project.

	cmdr_howto_installation
How to install the packages in the project.

	cmdr_howto_development
Portal document to the internals of the
			project.

doc/parts/

*.inc	- Common parts and text blocks used by the main
documentation files in the parent directory.

	configuration.inc	Configuration variables.
				Query and modify using kettle's
				@doc-config command.

definitions.inc More variables, derived from the
				basic configuration, not directly
				configurable.

module.inc Module description and the common
keywords of the project for indexing.

Edit to suit. It is often good enough,
				and easier, to simply reconfigure
				various settings (like author name,
				keywords, etc.).

welcome.inc General welcome text for the project.

related.inc List of related documents for standard
				cross-references between the guides.
Usually not edited, but can be.

				Requires the variables set in
				definitions.inc

feedback.inc Standard text block about feed-back
				for the project.

retrieve.inc Standard textblocks describing the SCM
scm.inc managing the sources, and how to
				retrieve revisions.

license.inc Text of the project's license. Query
and modify via the kettle commands
				@license, and @licenses

Logical structure
-----------------

I.e. what document includes what parts.
For code this would be a call tree.

-->	parts/module.inc
-->	parts/welcome.inc

[comment {
@EDIT Please edit to suit - Kettle based build and installation.
}]

[vset PTITLE] uses the Kettle application and package to handle building
and installation. It is assumed to be installed and working. Please see
section [sectref Kettle] in [sectref Requisites] for more information.

[para] Note that all access to Kettle is mediated by the [file build.tcl]
script, found in the top-level directory of the project.

[para] For the most basic installation of [vset PTITLE] run

[example_begin]
% /path/to/[vset PROJECT]/build.tcl install
[example_end]

This command uses the [syscmd kettle] application found in the
[variable PATH], and the associated [syscmd tclsh].

[para] The command builds all packages and applications of [vset PTITLE],
and then installs them so that the associated [syscmd tclsh] has access
to them. Any applications will become siblings of [syscmd tclsh].

[para] For more control about which version of [syscmd kettle] and/or
[syscmd tclsh] gets used run either

[example_begin]
% /path/to/kettle /path/to/[vset PROJECT]/build.tcl install
[example_end]

or even

[example_begin]
% /path/to/tclsh /path/to/kettle /path/to/[vset PROJECT]/build.tcl install
[example_end]

to specify the exact files to use.

[para]

On Windows it is possible to invoke the the file [file build.tcl] with a
double-click. This will start a graphical interface to the system, with
buttons for all the possible actions, which includes 'install'ation.

[para]

On unix the same GUI is acessible by invoking [file build.tcl] with the
arguments [cmd gui], i.e. as

[example_begin]
% /path/to/[vset PROJECT]/build.tcl gui
[example_end]

[para]

To get help about the methods of [file build.tcl], and their complete
syntax, simply invoke [file build.tcl] like

[example_begin]
% /path/to/[vset PROJECT]/build.tcl gui
[example_end]

[comment {--- Standard section about retrieval from fossil --}]

Assuming that you simply wish to look at the sources of the project,
or build a specific revision, the easiest way of retrieving the
sources is to:

[list_begin enum]

[enum] Log as "anonymous" into the repository (see [sectref Location]).
Use the semi-random password in the captcha.

[enum] Go to the "Timeline".

[enum] Choose the revision you wish to have and

[enum] follow its link to its detailed information page.

[enum] On that page, choose either the "ZIP" or "Tarball" link to get
a copy of this revision in the format of your choice.

[subsection Kettle]

This project uses the Kettle application and package as its build system.

[para] Please go to either the main repository at
[uri http://core.tcl.tk/akupries/kettle]

or the backup at
[uri http://chiselapp.com/andreas_kupries/repositories/Kettle]

and follow the instructions given at these sites to create a working
installation. They are not repeated here. If there are problems with
these instructions please file a bug against the Kettle project, and

[subsection Tcl]

This project requires a working installation of Tcl 8.5, or higher.

[para] Use whatever you are comfortable with, as long as it provides
Tcl 8.5, or higher.

[para] An easy way to get a proper installation of a recent Tcl 8.5,
(which I recommend) is to download and install

[uri http://www.activestate.com ActiveState's]
[uri http://www.activestate.com/activetcl {ActiveTcl 8.5}]

for your platform. Just follow the link and instruction on that site.

[para] After the installation of ActiveTcl 8.5 simply run the command

[example {
    teacup update
}]

This will install a lot more packages than found in the distribution
alone.

(Disclosure: I, Andreas Kupries, work for ActiveState, maintaining
ActiveTcl and TclDevKit).

[para] Do you wish to build Tcl on your own ?
The sources of all versions can be found at

[comment {--- Standard section about fossil in general --}]

For the curious (or a developer-to-be), the sources of this project
are managed by the [uri http://www.fossil-scm.org {Fossil SCM}].

Binaries for popular platforms can be found directly at its
[uri http://www.fossil-scm.org/download.html {download page}].

[para]

With that tool available the full history of our project can be
retrieved via:

[example_begin]
fossil clone [vset REPOSITORY] [vset PROJECT].fossil
[example_end]

followed by

[example_begin]
mkdir [vset PROJECT]
cd [vset PROJECT]
fossil open ../[vset PROJECT].fossil
[example_end]

to get a checkout of the head of the trunk.

'\"
'\" .AP type name in/out ?indent?
'\"	Start paragraph describing an argument to a library procedure.
'\"	type is type of argument (int, etc.), in/out is either "in", "out",
'\"	or "in/out" to describe whether procedure reads or modifies arg,
'\"	and indent is equivalent to second arg of .IP (shouldn't ever be
'\"	needed; use .AS below instead)
'\"
'\" .AS ?type? ?name?
'\"	Give maximum sizes of arguments for setting tab stops. Type and
'\"	name are examples of largest possible arguments that will be passed
'\"	to .AP later. If args are omitted, default tab stops are used.
'\"
'\" .BS
'\"	Start box enclosure. From here until next .BE, everything will be

'\"
'\" .VS ?version? ?br?
'\"	Begin vertical sidebar, for use in marking newly-changed parts
'\"	of man pages. The first argument is ignored and used for recording
'\"	the version when the .VS was added, so that the sidebars can be
'\"	found and removed when they reach a certain age. If another argument
'\"	is present, then a line break is forced before starting the sidebar.
'\"

'\"	Start of list of standard options for a Tk widget. The
'\"	options follow on successive lines, in four columns separated
'\"	by tabs.
'\"
'\" .SE
'\"	End of list of standard options for a Tk widget.
'\"
'\" .OP cmdName dbName dbClass
'\"	Start of description of a specific option. cmdName gives the
'\"	option's name as specified in the class command, dbName gives
'\"	the option's name in the option database, and dbClass gives
'\"	the option's class in the option database.

'\"
'\" The definitions below are for supplemental macros used in Tcl/Tk
'\" manual entries.
From here until next .BE, everything will be
'\"	enclosed in one large box.
'\"
'\" .BE
'\"	End of box enclosure.
'\"
'\" .CS
'\"	Begin code excerpt.
'\"
'\" .CE
'\"	End code excerpt.
'\"
'\" .VE
'\"	End of vertical sidebar.
'\"
'\" .DS
'\"	Begin an indented unfilled display.
'\"
'\" .DE
'\"	End of indented unfilled display.
'\"
'\" .SO
'\"	Start of list of standard options for a Tk widget. The
'\"	options follow on successive lines, in four columns separated
'\"	by tabs.
'\"
'\" .SE
'\"	End of list of standard options for a Tk widget.
'\"
'\" .OP cmdName dbName dbClass
'\"	Start of description of a specific option. cmdName gives the
'\"	option's name as specified in the class command, dbName gives
'\"	the option's name in the option database, and dbClass gives
'\"	the option's class in the option database.
'\"
'\" .UL arg1 arg2
'\"	Print arg1 underlined, then print arg2 normally.

.SH DESCRIPTION
Welcome to the Cmdr project,
written by Andreas Kupries,
and available from \fIhttps:/core.tcl.tk/akupries/cmdr\fR.
.PP
The audience of this document are anyone wishing to modify
Cmdr in any way, shape, or form. This can be a maintainer
fixing bugs, a developer adding functionality, or patching it to
accommodate local cicumstances, etc.

are already available in a directory of your choice, that it is known
how to build and install the project, and that all the necessary
requisites are available.
.SH "DEVELOPMENT TOOLS"
Cmdr (currently) does not require tools beyond those needed for
build and installation.
.SH "DEMONSTRATION/EXAMPLE APPLICATIONS"
Cmdr (currently) does not have demonstrations, nor examples.
.SH "DIRECTORY STRUCTURE"
Explain the physical layout (directory structure).
.SH "ARCHITECTURE & CONCEPTS"

.SH NAME
cmdr_howto_get_sources \- Cmdr - How To Get The Sources
.SH DESCRIPTION
Welcome to the Cmdr project,
written by Andreas Kupries,
and available from \fIhttps:/core.tcl.tk/akupries/cmdr\fR.
.PP
The audience of this document are anyone wishing to either have just a
look at Cmdr's sources, or to build the project, or to extend
and modify it. The list of \fBRelated Documents\fR provides
references to information for the latter two.
.SH LOCATION
The official repository of the project is at \fIhttps:/core.tcl.tk/akupries/cmdr\fR.
A mirror has been set up at
\fIhttp://chiselapp.com/user/andreas_kupries/repository/Kettle\fR,
in case of trouble with the main location.
.SH RETRIEVAL
Assuming that you simply wish to look at the sources of the project,
or build a specific revision, the easiest way of retrieving the
sources is to:
.IP [1]
Log as "anonymous" into the repository (see \fBLocation\fR).
Use the semi-random password in the captcha.
.IP [2]
Go to the "Timeline".
.IP [3]
Choose the revision you wish to have and
.IP [4]
follow its link to its detailed information page.
.IP [5]
On that page, choose either the "ZIP" or "Tarball" link to get
a copy of this revision in the format of your choice.
.PP
.SH "SOURCE CODE MANAGEMENT"
For the curious (or a developer-to-be), the sources of this project
are managed by the \fIFossil SCM\fR [http://www.fossil-scm.org].
Binaries for popular platforms can be found directly at its
\fIdownload page\fR [http://www.fossil-scm.org/download.html].
.PP
With that tool available the full history of our project can be
retrieved via:
.CS

fossil clone https:/core.tcl.tk/akupries/cmdr cmdr.fossil

.CE
followed by
.CS

mkdir cmdr
cd cmdr
fossil open ../cmdr.fossil

.CE
to get a checkout of the head of the trunk.

.SH NAME
cmdr_installation \- Cmdr - The Installer's Guide
.SH DESCRIPTION
Welcome to the Cmdr project,
written by Andreas Kupries,
and available from \fIhttps:/core.tcl.tk/akupries/cmdr\fR.
.PP
The audience of this document are anyone wishing to build the
Cmdr project, for either themselves, or others.
.PP
If you are a developer intending to extend or modify the project
please see the list of \fBRelated Documents\fR for references to
more information on this topic.
.PP
Please read \fICmdr - How To Get The Sources\fR first, if that was not done
already. Here we assume that the sources are already available in a
directory of your choice.
.PP
.SH REQUISITES
.SS TCL
This project requires a working installation of Tcl 8.5, or higher.
.PP
Use whatever you are comfortable with, as long as it provides
Tcl 8.5, or higher.
.PP
An easy way to get a proper installation of a recent Tcl 8.5,
(which I recommend) is to download and install
\fIActiveState's\fR [http://www.activestate.com]
\fIActiveTcl 8.5\fR [http://www.activestate.com/activetcl]
for your platform. Just follow the link and instruction on that site.
.PP
After the installation of ActiveTcl 8.5 simply run the command
.CS

    teacup update

.CE
This will install a lot more packages than found in the distribution
alone.
(Disclosure: I, Andreas Kupries, work for ActiveState, maintaining
ActiveTcl and TclDevKit).
.PP
Do you wish to build Tcl on your own ?
The sources of all versions can be found at
.TP
Tcl
\fIhttp://core.tcl.tk/tcl/\fR
.PP
.SS KETTLE
This project uses the Kettle application and package as its build system.
.PP
Please go to either the main repository at
\fIhttp://core.tcl.tk/akupries/kettle\fR
or the backup at
\fIhttp://chiselapp.com/andreas_kupries/repositories/Kettle\fR
and follow the instructions given at these sites to create a working
installation. They are not repeated here. If there are problems with
these instructions please file a bug against the Kettle project, and
not Cmdr.
.PP
.SH "BUILD & INSTALLATION"
Cmdr uses the Kettle application and package to handle building
and installation. It is assumed to be installed and working. Please see
section \fBKettle\fR in \fBRequisites\fR for more information.
.PP
Note that all access to Kettle is mediated by the "\fIbuild.tcl\fR"
script, found in the top-level directory of the project.
.PP
For the most basic installation of Cmdr run
.CS

% /path/to/cmdr/build.tcl install

.CE
This command uses the \fBkettle\fR application found in the
, and the associated \fBtclsh\fR.
.PP
The command builds all packages and applications of Cmdr,
and then installs them so that the associated \fBtclsh\fR has access
to them. Any applications will become siblings of \fBtclsh\fR.
.PP
For more control about which version of \fBkettle\fR and/or
\fBtclsh\fR gets used run either
.CS

% /path/to/kettle /path/to/cmdr/build.tcl install

.CE
or even
.CS

% /path/to/tclsh /path/to/kettle /path/to/cmdr/build.tcl install

.CE
to specify the exact files to use.
.PP
On Windows it is possible to invoke the the file "\fIbuild.tcl\fR" with a
double-click. This will start a graphical interface to the system, with
buttons for all the possible actions, which includes 'install'ation.
.PP
On unix the same GUI is acessible by invoking "\fIbuild.tcl\fR" with the
arguments \fBgui\fR, i.e. as
.CS

% /path/to/cmdr/build.tcl gui

.CE
.PP
To get help about the methods of "\fIbuild.tcl\fR", and their complete
syntax, simply invoke "\fIbuild.tcl\fR" like
.CS

% /path/to/cmdr/build.tcl gui

'\"
'\" The definitions below are for supplemental macros used in Tcl/Tk
'\" manual entries.
From here until next .BE, everything will be
'\"	enclosed in one large box.
'\"
'\" .BE
'\"	End of box enclosure.
'\"
'\" .CS
'\"	Begin code excerpt.
'\"
'\" .CE
'\"	End code excerpt.
'\"

'\" Copyright (c) 2013 Documentation, Andreas Kupries
'\"
'\" The definitions below are for supplemental macros used in Tcl/Tk
'\" manual entries.
From here until next .BE, everything will be
'\"	enclosed in one large box.
'\"
'\" .BE
'\"	End of box enclosure.
'\"
'\" .CS
'\"	Begin code excerpt.
'\"
'\" .CE
'\"	End code excerpt.
'\"

'\"
'\" Generated by tcllib/doctools/idx with format 'nroff'
'\" The definitions below are for supplemental macros used in Tcl/Tk
'\" manual entries.
From here until next .BE, everything will be
'\"	enclosed in one large box.
'\"
'\" .BE
'\"	End of box enclosure.
'\"
'\" .CS
'\"	Begin code excerpt.
'\"
'\" .CE
'\"	End code excerpt.
'\"

'\"
'\" Generated by tcllib/doctools/toc with format 'nroff'
'\" The definitions below are for supplemental macros used in Tcl/Tk
'\" manual entries.
From here until next .BE, everything will be
'\"	enclosed in one large box.
'\"
'\" .BE
'\"	End of box enclosure.
'\"
'\" .CS
'\"	Begin code excerpt.
'\"
'\" .CE
'\"	End code excerpt.
'\"

<p>Use whatever you are comfortable with, as long as it provides

<p>An easy way to get a proper installation of a recent Tcl 8.5,
(which I recommend) is to download and install
<a href="http://www.activestate.com">ActiveState's</a>
<a href="http://www.activestate.com/activetcl">ActiveTcl 8.5</a>

<p>After the installation of ActiveTcl 8.5 simply run the command</p>

alone.
(Disclosure: I, Andreas Kupries, work for ActiveState, maintaining
ActiveTcl and TclDevKit).</p>
